IUSD – Integrated Urbanism and Sustainable Design

Megacities, satellite cities and accelerating urbanisation are key words of our time. In the MENA region large numbers of the population have always lived in cities – some of the oldest settlements of the human race are located in the MENA region and to this day bear witness to significant city cultures. However, the urban population has seen strong growth in the last 60 years here too: on average 60% of the people now live in the cities. The MENA region is therefore a prime example of urban developments that are observed the world over.

Rapid growth in the cities means the region is facing a raft of challenges – social, cultural and ecological. This calls for creative and, above all, interdisciplinary approaches to solutions to appropriately address future changes.

The IUSD Master’s programme imparts knowledge about architecture, landscape planning and urbanism that is indispensible for a sustainable urban development. Therefore, the cities in the MENA region will continue to offer desirable living space.
