Berlin Module 2017

For the ninth time, after its start in 2009, the Berlin Module took place. From May 14 till May 18, almost 50 current students from the five GAMP participated in the event. After the official opening on May 15, with words of welcome from the BMZ, DAAD and GIZ, and an opening address by Professor Dr. Ahmed Ghoneim, Cultural Counsellor and Director of the Educational Mission of the Arab Republic of Egypt in Berlin, Professor Dr. Matthias Weiter introduced the three-level model of societal change. Professor Dr. Claus-Peter Haase presented an overview of organizations in the field of German-Arab cooperation.

Meetings with thematic organizations (e.g. Amnesty International, The Voice of German Industry BDI, or a local housing cooperative), federal ministries, and parliamentarians followed. Information and results of the meetings were discussed among the participants in thematic working groups. One of the highlights, beside the already traditional get-together in the Arab restaurant Casalot, was the discussion with former German Ambassador Bernd Erbel and his presentation on “Interests, Principles and Actors of German Foreign Policy in the MENA Region”.

In the afternoon the group was introduced to the GIZ cooperation management model Capacity Works. In working group sessions, they applied the model to their own practice and experience in specific projects. These projects comprised a colorful bunch of subjects, such as energy auditing in Burundi, olive tree production in Tunisia, the production process of a solar mobile charger, cloud computing, and potato refrigeration in Egypt, as well as safety management in India.

The working groups presented their results in a final market place session.
